Finally, finally…

Dear my friends, families and benefactors

I FINALLY heard a good news.

My second surgery is today (this morning at 9am)!

The initial culture result came back and there seems to be no bacteria growing from that culture. After a week of careful observation under Drs. Julio and Perez, it was declared that we can now safely assume the infection is gone.

We had been just waiting for the plastic surgent to be available to be available for taking a good look at all the results, and to schedule the appointment for my 2nd surgery. it just feels so long. We’ve already waited for more than a month for this. Although it has been one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done in my life it makes me realise I am a fortunate person when I read all the news around the world.

So all I can do is to focus on my little achievements – like “putting socks on by myself”, “I walked around the garden twide pushing the wheelchair”, “I ate 1/3 of dinner I was given”.

While waiting, we had some extraordinary experiences (well, for me- who appreciates little things even more now). The “art therapy”, which was in the leaflet, had not been available until now, assuming due to the scheduling conflict or something. This was a disappointment for some of us. Luckily, I did bring a minimum set of watercolor, brushes, paper, etc.

This happened all organically but I opened my room for our self ‘art therapy’ session, where four of us just picked what we wanted to paint.

Everyone except for me wad here is here to take care of her husband, so Mike could also have a break from having to watch over me for a few hours- which was a much needed rest for him. He has been so incredible taking care of all the finance, admin, confultations with doctors and nurses, let alone everyday help like going to the bathroom!

This group of pepole have left last weekend, some of whom I’ve gotten close to and I was quite sad. But they all said you’ll meet new people or something or someone will be sent your way. On that day a pastor came to visit (as I was in too much pain to attend the church meeting), and it’s always a great experience with being with someone spiritually so devoted.

There was also a lovely couple who was relatively new (they also left yesterday) came knocking on the door with a gift of box. My wall is filling up with all the cards people have given me. Some of these are from people I’m not really able to match their faces and names. I’m finally at least understanding the sayings like “God will provide the way” (there is a similar saying in Japanese too).

Thanks to your incredible spport and ittle miracles experience here while waiting, I became less and less worried, and I am certain I came out from my operation with flying colors. I hope you will have a great day.

 with Love

Complications

Dear friends, families and my benefacotors,
I have only just realized I  only posted about my surgery on FB. So here is the renewed version of where we are at. The truth is, it’s been really tough and I didn’t want to subject you to what I was going through- it’s hard for me to see friends worry and be sad.
The good news is that my surgery went well, thanks to the world’s renowed doctor Contreras and his excellent and caring team. Originally I was told “let’s just aim for making the quality of my life better”, rather than trying to remove tumor completely at the expense of everything else (like my body’s ability to sustain the surgery, I suppose). Instead, they were able to remove the tumors in my breast 100%. Everyone is very pleased about this.
So for the first few week I was bed-ridden and in total almost a month I could not go out of my room. I have been moving my feet and hands, as well as any other area I could possibly move, and now I am able to sit and walk for a short distance. This has made a huge difference in my life here.
Since everyone has been talking to Mike whenever he went down to the cafeteria, when I started going down to the communal area everyone already knew my name, and what I was going through. It is a giant emotional support web. This week I have been able to have more meals downstairs with everyone, and feel a lot more human again.
However it’s been a series of one complications after another since my first surgery. Like I said before every time I hear this news (that the culture came back not so great and it may well be another 20 days or more of waiting)  I  cry like a baby- but angels are always sent to my way: Mike had worked very hard to secure a room with balcony for us- as the lovely old couple was leaving in a few days. Now I can have the sun and the view when I need.

For those of you interested in more about the treatment, I have also started what is called the  Ozone Treatment, which directly works on the rest of the tumors in my body. It was in the original treatment plan but they chose not to until both my surgeries are donw- then they discussed and figured it may actually help with the infection as well.

The policy here is starting with lower dosage so it’s easier on the body especially like someone small like me.

This wait is all because they suspect that I had caught an infection possibly at the hospital in Japan before I left. Whatever it is, it’s very resistant to antibiotics.
So from the beginning I was told I need two surgeries and we have been on 3 different antibiotics, waiting for the infection to clear. The doctors tell us that my skin is healing super well and bacteria is very weak and hardly any, it’s not 100% gone yet. So I’m on my fourth antibiotics,  for 24 hours attached to IV and other equipment. It’s easy to get angry, sad and dissapointed, but instead, I am trying to see what these extra weeks here is giving me (endurance? more time to play with watercolor? help others somehow?)
I have been blessed with loving support from everyone here, and you guys from all over the world. I thank you every day for bringing me here. This is the perfect place. Thank you for those of you who’ve asking after me. Your loving thoughts keep me safe. And enjoy photos of your everyday life when you sent them to me too.
With Love

Power of prayer

Dearest friends, families and my benefactors,

I had not realized that this was not posted- so it’s almost been a month! I’m still at the hospital, due to many complications. This was written at the beginning of February.

———————————-

A few days have passed again and I am doing all right. So it looks like I will be having an operation either tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. This is amazing as hospitals in Japan said there was nothing they could do except for chemotherapy.

As someone who has never had an operation (!) I am a little nervous. But if I were to have one this place couldn’t get any better. The head doctor Dr. Contreras, the son of the founder, held my hand while he was talking. My anxiety got a relief- that something can be done now, finally.

Actually Dr. Contreras gives a talk every weekend here on Sunday for the patients. I managed to waddle over to the ‘church’ room and Mike and I found it very inspiring. I already forgot the details, but according to the double blind study done by UC SF, the group of parents who had people praying for them had a 30% higher recovery rate than the group that didn’t. Double blind here means neither the doctors or patients knew that they had people praying for them.

Now I think we can brush this aside (but there are apparently lots of similar studies) or be intrigued. I was intrigued because this is similar to what a philosopher Carl Jung called the collective consciousness.

Breakfast the other day. Egg on vegetable sauce and oatmeal.

Going back to Dr. Contreras’s talk, he talked a lot about the kind of mentality I’ve been trying to develop- his is in a context of Christianity. There are things I can’t control, all I can do is to try to have a clearer mind so when the help comes I won’t miss it, or be arrogant and say I can handle by myself. After the talk everyone held hands and prayed for healing, for the self and others. Then a lot of people came over and told me they’d been praying for me as I don’t make it downstairs. One of them had given me flowers through Mike.

I do think it’s a lovely thing that people say I pray for you. One of our cleaners, Leslie, always says “I pray for you, sweetie, every day and night”. When I am waiting for my bed to be done, she always covers me with a fresh sheet, and stroke my hair. When can’t see how that wouldn’t have a positive impact on your immune system!

Friday, 1 February

Although I was scheduled to do two treatments, I was told in the morning to just sit tight until the operation.

Saturday, 2 February

An exercise session on bed with a physical therapist. 50 minutes of moving my legs and arms. It felt great.

Sunday, 3 February

Some time in the garden in the Sun. ‘Church’ time in the morning.

Monday, 4 February

Doctors came by to tell us about the surgery.

My first week

Hello friends, famiies and everyone,

First of all, I am doing ok, and I thank you for bringing me to this place. (In case you don’t know my situation, you can find the background here.)

As I had suspected, it was rather difficult to update this blog for the past few days- between various checks, treatments and tests, being knocked out from painkillers and having meals and etc. (everythings takes about 10 times longer for me nowadays) , we have been recovering from our jetlag and travels.

I cannot NOT mention how wonderful I find our meals are. Even Mike, who is more carnivorous, loves it. Although i would have been totally happy with vegan food, I have been given either fish, egg or chicken added to the meal for my anemia and a lack of protein in general. Everyone else is craving some meat I think, and I’m like, “Your vegan dish looks great as it is…!” How is this for irony.

They have a cheerful menu board outside the cafeteria- which looks more like a restaurant. Unfortunately as I am unable to sit up with my pain, I have to have my meal delivered to my room (by Mike).

I thought though to share with you our personal experience here. One of the things that have really been helping us is how compassionate and positive people here are. Including patients like myself. Mike has been talking to a lot of very inspiring people and he always comes back to the room saying “Everyone says they’re praying for you.” And it’s so encouraging to see people saying this is their 3rd time or 4th time here, and they all look great and have their cancer either disappeared, dormant or in remission. Most of them from Stage IV.

Yesterday we had a wonderful visitor- Daniel is the grandson of the founder of this place and is a C.E.O here. He is a friend of mine whose family had her cancer healed here and they both helped us get here. We talked about how no one really knows our ‘expiration’ date, but there is so much in between living and the point of death. We talked about how when the mind and spirit lead the way the body may very well follow. I know I’m in the right place for me, thanks to the generous help from all of you.

This is our room. So I’m here pretty much all day, until I have a better mobility. All I can do right now is walk downstairs to lie on the grass in the sun, when it’s sunny. I had a handmade ice popsicle in the sun, which made me feel a little more normal! (Their sweetener is monk fruit).

I’ve always felt like “what is life if I’m not enjoying it?” It’s a bit of a stretch to say I’m “enjoying” this right now, but at least for most of the day I’m feeling pretty positive. So “keep doing chemo until you are no longer able to sustain and feel very sick all the time until then” – often the only choice that conventional doctors can give you once things get complicated as they have their hands tied with guidelines and what not- was never something I wanted to do. Or rather, I tried it and I knew it wasn’t for me. But I think in the long run it may lessen my emotional burden, as many believe that it’s the course you “should” take. I’m not that good at ignoring the majority when it comes to personal things. Too much chemotherapy for too long without adding in any other treatments, is probably not for a lot of people. But often it’s the only option. There is a pressure from your family who firmly believes in whatever recommended by doctors and hospitals. A blessing and curse of a comparatively good healthcare system in Japan.

But what I’ve learned is that the conventional treatment seems to work for a lot of people. My best friend in the UK has been cancer-free for several years now. It all depends on the type of cancer, your genetics and body functions and everything else including stress and the environment. So this place, which offers an integrative medicine- a mixture of conventional and ‘alternative’ treatments- is great. Actually great doesn’t even cover what I want to say. I feel safe here knowing they prioritize my body itself. So thank you, truly.

I have listed the past few days’ activities below if you are intereted.

Hello, the Oasis of Hope

On Thursday morning, the driver from the hospital picked us up at the hotel, and we crossed the border in what felt like 10 minutes!

Then after a short 30 minute drive, we arrived at the Oasis of Hope!

After a quick briefing and registration we went down to the cafeteria for lunch. There is a very good salad bar.

The basic food all vegan, although today I was told I will be given animal protein based on my blood test result… as I still am slightly anemic apparently.

Then we met with a doctor who asked us a list of questions and gave a very thorough physical check- literally from the top of my head to the tips of my toes.

After everything he gave a prayer for my healing, which I thought was nice. I know a lot of people are rather ‘allergic’ to religion, but I’ve always been relatively comfortable with basic religious teachings that try to help humanity. Well as long as it’s not so extreme or harmful to anyone. So I prayed with the doctor for my healing.

Then I started my treatment straight away.

Then a quick supper and time for bed. My first day. So far so good, everyone is very friendly and we are well taken care of. I am very grateful to be here.

We arrived at San Diego

Dear friends, families and everyone

I hope this article finds you well and in good spirit. Thank you so much for supporting me and Michael, we are truly grateful for your kindness and compassion. I am writing this blog for people who are cheering for me so you can check up this place if you ever wonder how I’m doing. (In case you don’t know my situation, you can find the background here.

As I am writing this Mike and I are in San Diego before heading to the Oasis of Hope on Thursday morning. We arrived last night and today we are resting. The two flights (connecting in Honolulu) were rather tough for me, but thanks to your help I was able to at least fly on Business/First class, where I could lie down flat. I don’t think I could have made it otherwise.

The hotel we are staying is in an area called Gaslamp Quarter and it looks like an interesting historic area. I say it looks like, as I couldn’t walk around to check out the area as I was in pain I had to turn around outside the hotel. But Mike brought us back some lunch, and we had it at the rooftop balcony.

Rooftop of Gaslamp Plaza Suite. Nothing fancy, but friendly and clean. Apparently it was a bank before. Built in 1930s, it was a skyscraper then.

Since I am bed-ridden, I thought to talk about pain here, as friends and families worry. A lot of people react with fear (or horror?!) when I say I’m in pain. Of course I’d rather not be in pain, but the way I see it is that it is a sign from the body, telling us that there is a place that needs to be taken care of. In the last year I’ve learnt some techniques to manage pain, both physically and mentally, and it helps. One thing I learnt for sure, is that fear makes pain worse.

So I try not to imagine the worst when pain takes place, and instead, think of my cat lying on a soft cushion or my dog doing something silly or cute. Sometimes moving your muscle can also relieve pain, which may be counterintuitive. This works with a lot of situations actually…!

My cat and dog. San the cat is very supple and soft…  and relaxing your body is the best thing for pain (or any other alignment).

More later, we are being picked up by the hospital (top-notch service!) on Thursday morning to head to Tijuana. The Oasis of Hope, literally for me.

Thank you for your support.

Mari
